We often think we need to make big, dramatic changes to see results, whether that’s overhauling our diet, cutting out whole food groups, or starting a strict new routine.
These “all or nothing” approaches can give us a mental boost in the short term– the feeling we're taking charge....but more often that not we end up feeling overwhelmed and defeated after a few days or weeks when real life kicks in.
Then the self-talk starts: “I’ve failed again. I can’t stick to anything.”
But what if the problem isn’t you? What if the problem is trying to do too much, too soon?
Building new habits takes time and a lot of repetition! Give yourself the best chance of success by taking small, consistent steps, the kind that feel so simple they almost seem too easy.
These tiny actions might not feel like much day to day, but they build momentum, confidence and long-term results that last.
A real example
A clients told me she felt she wasn’t making enough progress with balancing her evening meals. She was frustrated, convinced she “wasn’t doing enough”.
But during our chat, she mentioned that she’d stopped having a Kit Kat with her morning coffee.
Now, one Kit Kat doesn’t seem like much....But when you stack up 28 Kit Kats over a month, that’s a big pile!
Over the month (28 days), that was equivalent to:
‼️2912kcal less energy consumed
‼️78.4g less saturated fat - equivalent to 2/3 a block of butter
‼️568.4g less of sugar - equivalent to 142 teaspoons!!
By simply changing one small daily habit, she’d made a massive positive impact on her health.
That’s the power of small changes, they compound over time.
Start small
If you’re thinking, “I need to do something for my health, but I don’t know where to start,” here’s my advice:
👉 Pick one tiny thing.
👉 Do it every day.
👉 Celebrate the win.
That could be:
- Having one piece of fruit mid-morning
- Adding an extra glass of water to your day
- Preparing a balanced snack (like hummus with wholewheat crackers or veggie sticks) for that mid-afternoon dip
Small, simple steps when done consistently can give massive health benefits.
Over time, these become habits for life, and that’s where real transformation happens.
Remember: Consistency beats perfection, every single time.
